Abstract

Law nº 10.639/03 establishes the mandatory teaching of African and Afro- Brazilian history and culture in basic education curricula in Brazil. The central objective of the article is to present the legal regime in which law nº 10.639/03 is inserted and the municipal actions that seek to give it greater effectiveness in the Municipality of São Paulo. Considering that the law completed 20 years in January 2023 and that it represents a major advance in the fight for anti-racist education, the study is relevant to understanding the advances and challenges that arise from this law. The research starts from a historical contextualization presenting the roots of structural racism, epistemicide and its relationship with anti-racist education and then, through bibliographical research, it relates the Constitution and the various infra-constitutional norms, as well as presenting some of the municipal actions developed in São Paulo over the last 20 years.
